Temenos Dios

Zeus (Dios):

Zeus is the King of the Greek Pantheon. In imagery He is seen seated on a throne at the top of Olympos, where He maintains order among the Gods and mortals. In one hand, He holds a scepter with an eagle mounted upon it, and in the other hand, He holds the thunderbolt, His sacred weapon and a symbol of His kingship. His wife and Queen is Hera, although He has many other lovers, including Dione, His companion at the Oracle of Dodona, and Ganymede, a prince so beautiful he was made Zeus' personal cup-bearer.

As Zeus Meilikhios, Zeus is not only Olympian, but Khthonic (of the Underworld). In this role, He is the purifier. He cleanses those who have shed blood, and ancient warriors had to go to His altar at propitiate Him before returning home. As Zeus Meilikhios, He is a protector of children, and during His great festival of Diasia, children were given gifts in His name.

At Dodona, Zeus had a sacred oracle, where His priests would determine His will and advice by watching the movements of His sacred oak tree, and the doves who lived in it.

Upon the Altar

Below are prayers, artwork and other offerings which have been brought to Zeus. If you are interested in leaving an offering of your own, please email the Neokoros containing the subject line: “Zeus Offering.”

Holy Zeus, Master of the Thunderbolt,
Upholder of Justice and Order,
Father of many Gods and mortals,
Whose sacred animals are the bull, swan, eagle and snake:
May you bring peace to this world,
And give this temple Your blessing!
